As lab testing technologies, infection control policies, and reporting metrics have evolved over the years, the diagnosis of C. difficile infections has remained a vexing and often controversial topic. Recently updated clinical practice guidelines from IDSA/SHEA attempt to shed new light on a familiar debate, but some of the same challenges remain.
